CHAPTER TEN
âURGENT CALL FOR YOU, Mr. Sinclair, on line three. He refuses to be put off.â
Matt scowled. He had fifteen minutes to scan the documents one last time for the largest merger heâd thus far negotiated in his career. Heâd already used up five precious minutes first thing that morning anguishing over telephoning Kate and then had chickened out when the brisk hello of her voice mail answered. Put the receiver down in a cold sweat. Just like a teenager.
Still, his secretary was excellent at fielding calls, so he knew heâd have to take this one. He checked the time again. The team should be finishing their prelunch snacks in the boardroom. He forced himself to relax. The whole Marchant-Barnes business couldnât have come at a worse time. Not to mention the added complication of one Kate Reilly.
He sighed. Maybe the million-plus commission heâd snare from the merger would give him an advantage there. Sighed again. Doubted it. Not with someone who appeared as genuine as Kate Reilly. Which was precisely what attracted him to her. Along with a few obvious other traits, of courseâ¦
âMr. Sinclair?â his secretary prompted.
âYeah, yeah. Iâll take it. And, Paula, Iâve approved the press release. Iâll have it delivered to you as soon as the papers have been signed. Thanks, I appreciate it. We all worked hard. Oh, and can you confirm those luncheon reservations for us? Two oâclock at the Ritz. I think about ten of us. Not counting you. Of course I want you there. Okay, thanks, Paula.â
He pressed the phone button and, clutching the receiver to his ear, resumed skimming the merger documents. âSinclair here. What can I do for you? What?â
He tossed his pen onto the desk. âAre you sure? You talked to her? Damn.â His stomach roiled. âShe actually asked outright? God, what was she thinking? Whatâs that? I donât believe it. Say what you want. Sheâs not the type. I told youââ He stopped, his mind racing.
He couldnât think clearly at all, the figures from the documents and Kate marching into the bar swirling together in a nauseating concoction. He took a calming breath, then said, âSo now what? Uh-huh. I donât knowâ¦itâs your call. Your show. Yeah, yeah. Call me tomorrow.â Matt set the receiver down and lowered his face into his hands. Great timing.
He was torn between throttling Kate and begging her to take a nice long holiday somewhereâanywhereâaway from Manhattan. And now there was this other, unpredictable side of Kate. One he didnât dare contemplate. Not now.
The intercom buzzed again. âMr. Sinclair? Theyâre ready for you.â
Matt groaned. âOkay. Be right there.â He inhaled deeply, forced Kate Reilly out of his mind, shuffled the papers in order and headed for the door. Hoping he wasnât about to blow a million bucks.
THE FIRST THING Kate did when she got back to her flat was check her voice mail. For some reason sheâd hoped thereâd be a message from Matt. But nothing. She felt like flinging the phone across the room.
